Unit Plan Objectives: The students will use an iPod and resources to assist them with the following -
· Define new vocabulary
· Explain characteristics of hemispheres
· Name and locate reference points on globes
· Number and locate parallels and meridians
· Use latitude and longitude to locate places on the Earth
Materials Needed:
· Globes/maps of the world
· Computers with internet
· iPods - 15
· Social Studies Book for reference
· Google Earth application
· Dictionary application
· Journal to write in

New Vocabulary:
· Parallels
· Meridians
· Latitude
· Longitude
· Hemisphere
· Prime Meridian
· Equator
Procedures for Unit:
· Assumed ( previous lessons on how to operate an iPod)
· Select work groups for this week’s project.
· Using your iPod, find the dictionary application and define the new vocabulary words for this lesson using the correct meaning of the word. Write the word and definition in your Geography notebook.
· Students will need to practice with the globes and maps locating their new vocabulary. Teacher will direct the class to specific words and as teams, locate the term on the globe and Geography maps.
· Students will need to locate the hemispheres on the Earth and explain in writing where they are found.
· After each work group can identify and explain each term, they will be asked to draw a picture of the Northern and Western Hemisphere. After the picture is drawn, you may use a resource to label latitude and longitude lines.
· Write down the names of ten places in North America including your own community. List cities, countries, states, or lakes. Locate each place on a globe or map and find the approximate latitude and longitude of each place. Record your answers on your record sheet.
· Use your iPod Touch application called Google Earth to find your exact location. Remember to record the degrees and hemispheres. Write the information on your record sheet in the correct column. Compare your results – approximation versus Google Earth. What happened? Was your estimation too high or too low or right on? Justify your response in your journal and be complete. You will discuss your results with the class.
Assessment or Evaluation:
1. Journal writing

1. Participation in work group – rubric for group work
2. Check list for completing each piece of the assignment - work in progress
